All eyes will be on our February cover girl Natalie Portman in the coming months. The actress (and new face of Miss Dior Cherie) is nominated for a Best Actress Golden Globe for her role in Black Swan and she recently announced that she was engaged and pregnant with choreographer Benjamin Millepied, who she met on the set of the film. “This is the most private of private experiences,” Portman told InStyle. “But I am completely awed by the whole process we are living through. I cannot express how lucky I feel.” Next up, she’s starring in the romantic comedy No Strings Attached alongside Ashton Kutcher, out January 21st. But are women really capable of no-strings attached sex? “I certainly have friends who could deal with that and others who could not,” she said. “It’s something I’ve seen in high-achieving women—they compartmentalize. You’ve got your work, your friends, your exercise, and your sex. [Grins.] You can tick off those boxes.” For more of our exclusive interview with Portman, check out the February issue of InStyle, on newsstands Friday!

InStyle designer (and part-time blogger) Jenni Radosevich knows an easy way to give your casual dress a little edge. In this month’s January issue (page 38), she shows you how to add an exposed zipper to your dress in two easy steps.
What You’ll Need:
Sweater dress, zipper trim, and waterproof glue.
1. Measure down the center of the dress’s back to determine length of zipper trim required. Allow for two inches of trim above neck and below hemline.
2. Pin trim to dress to ensure zipper is straight. Working in 2-inch increments, remove pins, apply glue to dress, and attach trim. Hold in place for five seconds to secure. Fold loose ends into dress and attach with glue. Let dry for 24 hours. (Hand-wash only!)

How does Helen Mirren look so fabulous on the red carpet? She let us in on her secret: “The stripper shoes I buy on Hollywood Boulevard: 10-inch heels with 5-inch platforms,” the British actress and current star of The Tempest told us in January’s issue of InStyle. “They make your legs look wonderful.” As for her style icon? “Helena Bonham Carter,” Mirren said. “She’s unique, bohemian, and inventive. I also love Lady Gaga’s radical use of fashion.” For more red-carpet secrets from Helen Mirren, pick up a copy of January’s InStyle, on newsstands now.
Kate Hudson‘s hair always looks as effortless as it does perfect, but when InStyle caught up with the actress for our January issue, she revealed that her prep routine is actually the opposite. “I’m wearing every product on the shelf,” Hudson laughed. “Seriously, after an event it can take four washcloths to remove the ‘natural look.'” As for deciding between going for a curly or straight style: “It depends on the weather,” she said. “Unlike most women, I love the humidity. It helps enhance my natural curl.” For more Kate Hudson hair and beauty secrets, pick up the January issue of InStyle magazine, on newsstands now.

Graphic designer turned Chanel nail artist Tom Bachik tends to the tips of celebrities all the time, which is why we wanted to find out his top manicure moments when we caught up with him this month. And some of the loveliest Hollywood ladies topped his list, including Victoria Beckham, Jennifer Lopezand Christina Ricci. “It’s a natural look that’s not natural at all,” Bachik says of Beckham’s nude Inattendu color by Chanel. He picked Jennifer Lopez’s brown color (Particuliere by Chanel) for a different reason. “The dark neutral polish complements her outfit—and it is amazing with her skin tone.” And as for Ricci’s fruity Chanel hue Orange Fizz? “I was thinking young and summer with this shade,” he says. “The nails really became a part of her outfit.” For Bachik’s expert techniques for nailing the perfect manicure, click ahead.
Gwyneth Paltrow showed off her singing voice by guest-starring on Glee this season, but turns out, that was only a warm-up! The Oscar-winning actress, GOOP.com editor, mother of two and our January cover girl turned herself into a full-blown singer for her role in the upcoming movie Country Strong, in theaters January 7th. “I’ve never prepared for anything more in my life,” Paltrow told us. “There was studying with an accent coach, learning to play guitar, and of course the singing. My voice didn’t have any power or strength at all, and I wanted to try and sing properly.” And she’s proud of how it turned out: “You know, last night when I was watching the film, I thought, This is the best job I’ve ever done,” she said. “Normally I can’t stand to see myself, but with this film I felt like it all came together, all that hard work and putting myself in such an uncomfortable position where I felt so scared of how I was going to do it. I’m happy with how it turned out. I am.” For more of our exclusive interview with Paltrow, check out the January issue of InStyle, on newsstands Friday.
