In the morning, she wore a Roksanda Ilincic dress and matching coat, which she accented with a pair of patent leather red gloves. For the evening’s state dinner, she opted for an Alexander McQueen red gown with black brushstrokes from the 2011 resort collection. Her choice of red wasn’t an accident—red is the traditional color of good luck and happiness in China. Also at the dinner was Vera Wang, Michelle Kwan and Barbra Streisand.

We can’t help but wonder if one has to do with the other, but in any case, it’s great news for Temperley, who will receive the honor at a ceremony later this year. Other fashion industry recipients of the Queen’s honors this year include Tanya Sarne, founder of Ghost, and Mark and Mo Constantine, founders of Lush Cosmetics. These honorees join an established group: Past recipients of British Empire honors include handbag designer Anya Hindmarch, photographer Nick Knight, Vivienne Westwood and late designer Alexander McQueen.

Britain’s top designers were honored yesterday in London for the annual British Fashion Awards, including footwear designer Nicholas Kirkwood (center) who was named Accessory Designer of the Year. The designer, who is known for his architecturally-inspired shoes, got his start working with Kate Middleton’s favorite hat maker Philip Treacy. Kirkwood’s eponymous line garnered attention last spring when shoe-fanatic Sarah Jessica Parker wore his suede platform shoes (shown far left) three times in one week! His other celebrity fans include Claudia Schiffer (center, right) and Jessica Alba, shown above in a pair of Nicholas Kirkwood sandals. Other BFA winners include Phoebe Philo of Celine for Designer of the Year, Mulberry for Designer Brand, Burberry for Digital Innovation Award, Naomi Campbell for the Special Recognition Award and resounding new it-girl Alexa Chung for British Style.
