Malia Obama, the president’s eldest daughter, is taking after her mother First Lady Michelle Obama as a rising style star. Last week, the 12-year-old wore a green printed dress by Chris Benz for the White House state dinner, a look from the designer’s spring 2010 collection. Meanwhile, her mother chose a red gown by Alexander McQueen for the same occasion.

Who Designed Michelle Obama’s State of the Union Dress?

[tiImage width=”300″ height=”450″ url=”http://img2.timeinc.net/instyle/images/2011/wrn/012511-obama-300.jpg” credit=”Jim Young/Landov ” align=”left” border=”1″ alt=”Michelle Obama State of the Union”]

The answer is Rachel Roy. The New York designer created the silver silk shift dress that First Lady Michelle Obama wore for the President’s State of the Union address in Washington, D.C. last night. She accessorized with drop earrings and stacked lucite bracelets, and she also pinned on a black and white ribbon in memory of the Tuscon shootings. “The First Lady looked picturesque and elegant at last night’s State of the Union Address,” Roy told InStyle exclusively of seeing her design on Michelle Obama. “I am humbled by the tremendous support she has shown me and it is always the highest honor to have her wear one of my designs.” Obama has worn Roy’s designs more than eight times for public appearances during her husband’s presidency.

In the morning, she wore a Roksanda Ilincic dress and matching coat, which she accented with a pair of patent leather red gloves. For the evening’s state dinner, she opted for an Alexander McQueen red gown with black brushstrokes from the 2011 resort collection. Her choice of red wasn’t an accident—red is the traditional color of good luck and happiness in China. Also at the dinner was Vera Wang, Michelle Kwan and Barbra Streisand.

White tees are looking fabulous lately. Michelle Obama left Hawaii last night wearing her plain top with a colorful pink and purple animal print skirt; Kate Bosworth attended the Hollywood Style Awards last month wearing Jil Sander‘s white-plus-mint green look from the label’s spring 2011 collection; and Fairly Legal star Sarah Shahi complemented her minimal Dolce & Gabbana top with a colorful D&G floral skirt this fall. Michelle Obama's Latest Designer Favorite: Jolibe

[tiImage width=”300″ height=”400″ url=”http://img2.timeinc.net/instyle/images/2010/wrn/122910-michelle-obama-300.jpg” credit=”Kent Nishimura/SIPA Press/ABACA” align=”left” border=”1″ alt=”Michelle Obama Jolibe”]The following is a guest post from one of our favorite blogs, Fabsugar.

While vacationing in Hawaii over the holidays, Michelle Obama wore a printed skirt by the label Jolibe, purchased from Ikram, her go-to Chicago store. Jolibe’s spring collection, designed by Joel Diaz, is filled with sheer fabrics, soft, sculptural pieces and modern silhouettes. Will this be the First Lady’s new favorite label? We wonder…

Michelle Obama‘s fashion choices are full of surprises, as she impeccably mixes high fashion (Moschino), rising designers (Jason Wu) and national chains (J.Crew and H&M). This week, she surprised us again by wearing a vintage dress when she filmed the “Christmas in Washington” special, which airs on TNT tonight at 8 p.m. She wore a black dress with lace overlay from the 50’s for the event, created by the late American designer Norman Norell, which she purchased from New York Vintage in New York City. The owner of the store told the Huffington Post that the First Lady is planning to wear more dresses from the vintage shop in the future.
